The shit hit the fan in the trans blogosphere last night, when it came to light that there is a disturbing new section in the Identity Screening Regulations used in airports throughout Canada. Simp…
This actually exists. In 2014. I have a Canadian partner, I am mid transition…I knew I had to be careful but holy shit. This actually terrifies me. How does this make any sense? Why do gender markers even exist on photo ID’s?
NOPE FUCK THIS
This applies to NB persons as well, if you do not present as your assigned sex.
And here I thought Canada was ahead of the curve on social issues. :/
A couple of things.
A) It’s incorrect and misleading to use the phrase banned. They are not banned. Information from a health care professional explaining the apparent difference is acceptable and allows for boarding, *and* an emergency decision can be made at the time by the Transportation Minister or his/her designate. Which probably means the supervisor on duty at each boarding area.
B) The article is over 2 years old, and a quick google reveals that for intervening the 2 years that no-one had been denied boarding as a result of their presented gender not matching their ID.
Having said that, as a Canadian I’m embarrassed and upset. We can do better.
